During the years 1923–1924, the University of Pennsylvania Museum Expedition (UME) excavated on the summit of Tel Bet She’an. While reaching down to the earlier strata, the excavators cleared the layers of the later periods, leaving scanty remains of the Hellenistic period at the western fringes of the mound; they were later excavated by the Institute of Archaeology of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem expedition (IAHU; see below).
