Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent condition associated with significant burden in terms of reduced quality of life, lower productivity, increased prevalence of other conditions, and increased health care costs. In the general population of the United States, epidemiological studies of MDD estimate lifetime prevalence between 13 and 16 percent and 12-month prevalence between 5 and 7 percent among adults (Hasin et al., 2005; Kessler, Berglund, et al., 2003).
