n this chapter I chiefly explore the discourse that sought to smooth the way for routing Syrian refugees to Detroit. My goal is to provide a broader understanding of what has been termed the greatest refugee crisis since World War II (Packer 2015). The debate on whether the United States should help to address the crisis, and to what extent, including the number of refugees it would take in, occurred within a larger global context.
