The United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted Agenda 2030 in 2015 with a set of wide–ranging goals that articulate the desired outcome of sustainable development. These so–called Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were the result of two processes: the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of 2000, and the results of the 2012 Rio+20 Summit, which augmented Agenda 21 of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Hence the SDGs are an effort to integrate the development and environmental agendas.
